The Museum of Particularly Bad Art

Inspired by the Museum of Bad Art (above), bric-a-brac dealer Helen Round founded what might be described as an Australian version. Exhibitions

The Art of War: Otto Dix's Der Krieg [War] cycle 1924

Otto Dix (1891 - 1969) served on both the Western and Eastern fronts in World War I, being severely wounded several times. War profoundly affected Dix, and as an artist he took every opportunity, both during his active service and afterwards, to document his experiences. These experiences would become the subject matter of many of his later paintings, and are central to the Der Krieg cycle.

The Art of War: Otto Dix's Der Krieg runs at the National Gallery of Australia from 17 December 2005 to 30 April 2006.

Crescent Moon: Islamic Art of Southeast Asia

Crescent Moon is a spectacular visual exploration of the Islamic heritage of Australia's nearest neighbours. The first major international exhibition to focus on the Islamic art of Southeast Asia, Crescent Moon introduces Australian audiences to the beauty and complexity of Islamic culture within our region.

A wide variety of media, including metalwork, manuscript illumination, textiles and wood carving reveals the unique developments in the arts of Islamic Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as the Muslim communities of Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Crescent Moon: Islamic Art of Southeast Asia runs at the National Gallery of Australia from 24 February - 28 May 2006

Constable: impressions of land, sea and sky

March 2006 sees the first major Constable exhibition in Australia for over thirty years open at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

John Constable (1776 - 1837) was one of the foremost English landscape painters of the 19th century, renowned for his pure and unaffected representation of nature. Influential on artists painting landscapes outdoors, in expanding the range of colours used and in a greater freedom of handling of paint, his art became the benchmark for landscape painters in Europe during the nineteenth century.

Constable: impressions of land, sea and sky runs from  3 March 2006 - 12 June 2006
