Works by Christobel Bennett

Born at Balaklava, South Australia

From 1971 to 1994 I lived near the south coast of Western Australia, at Hopetoun. During this time I studied the History of Art and Drawing, and tried to capture with water colour and oil paints the magnificent skies and tracts of bush, and the rugged grandeur of the coast line. During this time I organized and took part in workshops and summer schools in Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe, with tutors from Fremantle Arts Centre.

In 1993, while travelling in the very different environment of Europe, I painted on location, producing a large folio of drawings and water colours, some of which have been used as the basis for large works.

In 1994 I moved to Perth to commence full time studies at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 1999 with an Honours degree in History and cognate studies in Fine Arts. This was followed by Edith Cowan University's Certificate in Museum Studies, which enabled me to serve until December 2006 as the Coordinator of Museum Services for the City of Subiaco, and Curator of the Subiaco Museum.

I return regularly to the south coast, to Hopetoun, Esperance, Albany and Cape Naturaliste - those spectacular regions that in their juxtaposition of land and sea have made a lasting impact on my art practice, and which generate in the work a certain sense of belonging and identity.
